Brownies Out & About
May. 23rd, 2015 10:10 pmHalf term has arrived and with it a week off from Brownies. However, before we reached our week off we managed to find plenty to do. Election Day we held our own election, with some of the girls standing to be Brownie representative and putting forward ideas which they felt would improve Brownies. The girls all got to vote for who they felt had the best ideas - a secret ballot, except for helping the youngest ones write the names. We had promised we would do some of the ideas the winning Brownie chose, and in the end we were so impressed with a number of the ideas from all the candidates we shall be including them in our autumn programme. Some of the really popular ideas were things we wouldn't have thought of, so we shall be looking at World Cultures and Science Investigator, as well as sponsoring an animal.
In the meantime we have been working for the Out & About badge. Part of the badge requires taking a walk in the neighbourhood, using a map. It has been dry on meeting nights for weeks, so guess which evening it rained. The maps became somewhat soggy, but nevertheless we carried on, completing a quiz as we went. It amazes us that despite sending home notes the week before telling parents we were going for a walk, some still didn't send coats despite knowing what the weather was like. Others came equipped with wellies.
This week we continued with our badgework, with the ever popular mini plays. The subject being either the Green Cross Code, the Countryside Code or Water Safety. It's always interesting seeing how each six works when left to do something as a group. Some sixes manage to involve all members, whilst others are dominated by one of two and the quieter ones are left out. We do our best to emphasise one of the important aspects of being a Brownie (and Guiding), that everyone has a part to play. One of the best playlets showed how to cross the road safely and involved all members of the six equally, whether as cars or pedestrians.
So now we have a week off, and the potential of four new girls when we come back - which may be a challenge, since strictly speaking we only have two spaces. Fortunately we very rarely have full attendance.
